Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows is a German neoclassical darkwave project founded in 1989 by the sole human member, Anna-Varney Cantodea. The music is an intensely personal and theatrical exploration of themes like depression, isolation, death, and transgender identity. Characterized by Cantodea's unique, emotive vocals, the sound fuses baroque, medieval, and classical arrangements with electronic and darkwave elements. The 'Ensemble of Shadows' refers to spiritual entities Cantodea credits with inspiration. Refusing to perform live, the project has maintained a significant cult following through albums like 'Todeswunsch' and 'Dead Lovers' Sarabande', released on the #Apocalyptic Vision# label.
