The Smashing Pumpkins

Formed in Chicago in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins developed a distinct sound that merged elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, dream pop, and gothic rock. [1, 2, 6] The band’s approach was defined by its densely layered, guitar-heavy arrangements, wide dynamic shifts, and the cathartic, confessional lyricism of frontman Billy Corgan. [4, 5] Albums such as *Siamese Dream* (1993) and the double LP *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* (1995) were pivotal in establishing the group as a commercially successful and influential force.
