Tom Waits is an American singer, songwriter, and actor whose singular career is defined by his distinctive, gravelly voice and theatrical, genre-defying music. He emerged from the 1970s Los Angeles folk circuit with a persona indebted to Beat poetry and late-night, piano-led balladry, established on albums like 'Closing Time'.
