Tony Iommi

Anthony Frank Iommi is an English guitarist and songwriter recognized as a primary architect of the heavy metal genre. [1, 2] As a co-founder and the sole constant member of Black Sabbath, his musical direction defined the band's influential sound. [1, 12] A formative industrial accident, which severed the tips of two fretting fingers, forced him to innovate with lighter-gauge strings, downtuned guitars, and prosthetic fingertips. [1, 10] This adaptation resulted in a signature sonic palette built on powerful, distorted, and dark-toned riffs that established a foundational vocabulary for heavy metal guitar. [1, 11] Iommi's compositional approach shaped a new, heavier form of rock music.
