Toshiko Akiyoshi

A Japanese pianist, composer, and preeminent figure in modern big band jazz, Toshiko Akiyoshi was born in Manchuria and began her career in postwar Japan. [1] After moving to the U.S., she shaped a distinct orchestral voice rooted in bebop but defined by its elaborate fusion of jazz with Japanese musical traditions, including distinctive harmonies and instruments. [4, 6] Forming the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra with saxophonist Lew Tabackin, she created a formidable vehicle for her programmatic compositions for three decades. [8, 9] Akiyoshi’s work expanded the textural and narrative possibilities of the big band, establishing her as a singular composer-arranger and the first woman to win top honors in Down Beat magazine's polls.
