Ukem Stephen

Ukem Stephen is a Nigerian trumpeter recognized for his significant role in the architecture of Afrobeat. As a core member of Fela Kuti's backing bands, Africa 70 and later Egypt 80, his trumpet work was fundamental to the powerful and intricate horn sections that defined the genre. [1] Stephen’s contributions are documented across a series of seminal albums from the 1970s, including "Expensive Shit," "Zombie," and "Sorrow, Tears and Blood," where his playing helped forge the signature call-and-response dialogue between the brass and Kuti's own saxophone and vocals. [2, 3] His legacy is not that of a soloist, but of an essential ensemble player whose sound is woven into the fabric of modern African music.
