Wipers

Wipers

Formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Greg Sage, Wipers began as a studio-focused project intended to exist outside of traditional industry promotion. [2, 4] The group’s sound was defined by a fusion of punk’s raw velocity with intricate, winding song structures, heavily distorted yet clean guitar tones, and Sage’s dark, introspective lyrics. [3, 9] Evolving from the directness of their debut, *Is This Real?*, to the expansive, atmospheric arrangements of *Youth of America*, they reshaped punk's boundaries. [5, 1] Wipers' influential catalog became a foundational blueprint for the Pacific Northwest grunge scene, notably shaping the sound of bands like Nirvana. [8, 4]
