Part of the expansive 'Éthiopiques' archival series, this breathtaking volume introduced the world to the profoundly beautiful solo piano compositions of an Ethiopian nun. Recorded initially in the early 1960s to raise money for an orphanage, Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru's playing miraculously fuses the fluid impressionism of Chopin and Debussy with traditional, pentatonic Ethiopian scales. The resulting music is an unclassifiable, deeply meditative expression of spiritual longing and grace.
