Dakar
by John Coltrane
Although credited solely to John Coltrane to capitalize on his skyrocketing early-60s fame, 'Dakar' was originally recorded in 1957 as a session co-led by baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. The driving, blues-heavy hard bop set notably features a highly unusual horn frontline consisting of one tenor and two baritone saxophones. Despite its somewhat misleading packaging by Prestige, the album offers a muscular, deeply swinging glimpse into Coltrane's rapid technical development.
