Afro-Jazz

Afro-Jazz is a synthesis of African musical idioms with the harmonic and improvisational structures of American jazz, primarily post-bop and free jazz. Originating in the late 1950s, the style is defined by its integration of polyrhythmic percussion, traditional instruments like the kora and mbira, and vocal/instrumental call-and-response patterns. It moves beyond standard jazz forms, often employing modal vamps and ostinatos to create a hypnotic, cyclical foundation for spiritual and politically charged expression. Emerging as a significant voice for Pan-Africanism and the Black Arts Movement, its influence shaped the trajectory of spiritual jazz and continues to inform contemporary global music.
