Afrobeat

Originating in 1960s Ghana and Nigeria, Afrobeat merges West African highlife and Yoruba music with American funk and jazz. The genre was pioneered and codified by Nigerian multi-instrumentalist *Fela Kuti* and his drummer *Tony Allen*, who established its sonic template of sprawling, instrumental-heavy arrangements. Characterized by complex, interlocking polyrhythms, prominent horn sections, and vamping guitar lines, the music creates a hypnotic, groove-based foundation for chanted, politically charged vocals. Its compositions often serve as vehicles for both social commentary and extended improvisation, influencing global funk, jazz, and hip-hop scenes.
