Andean Music

Andean music is a vast category of styles originating in the Andes mountain range of South America, with roots in pre-Columbian indigenous cultures. Its sonic identity is shaped by a distinctive wind-forward palette, featuring the breathy quena flute and layered siku panpipes, grounded by the rhythmic pulse of the bombo legüero drum and the bright, high-pitched strumming of the charango. Evolving through syncretism with Spanish colonial forms, the genre became a powerful vessel for cultural identity and social commentary, particularly through the Nueva Canción movement, which carried its plaintive melodies and themes of land and justice to a global stage.
