Benga

Benga is a popular music genre originating from Kenya's Luo community around Lake Victoria in the mid-20th century. Its core sound is defined by fast-paced, interlocking electric guitar lines where the lead guitar plays intricate, high-pitched melodies that mimic the traditional nyatiti lyre, while a syncopated rhythm guitar and a fluid, melodic bassline create a dense, cyclical groove. The style evolved from traditional Luo folk and Cuban rumba, migrating to Nairobi and becoming a dominant force in East African music by the 1970s, celebrated for its infectious dance rhythms and vibrant instrumental virtuosity.
