Cuddlecore emerged from the post-punk and C86 indie pop scenes of the mid-1980s, primarily defined by an ethos of deliberate amateurism and heartfelt sincerity. Pioneered by artists like *Beat Happening* and *Talulah Gosh* on labels such as #K Records# and #Sarah Records#, the style is characterized by jangly, low-fidelity guitars, simple melodic structures, and direct, often twee lyrics centered on innocent love and everyday anxieties. It subverted rock's traditional machismo, shaping an intimate, anti-professional aesthetic that prioritized emotional connection over technical proficiency and influenced subsequent generations of indie pop.
