Emerging from the post-industrial and neofolk movements of the 1980s, Dark Folk refines traditional acoustic songcraft through a lens of melancholy and esotericism. The genre is characterized by its sparse arrangements, centering on acoustic guitar, strings, and often unconventional folk instruments, which together create an atmosphere of somber introspection and organic texture. It diverges from its neofolk progenitors by prioritizing themes of nature, mythology, and personal despair over overt political commentary.
