Deathrock

Originating from the late 1970s American West Coast punk scene, Deathrock is a subgenre of Rock music that merges the raw energy of Punk with the macabre aesthetics of early Gothic Rock. Sonically, it is defined by angular, effects-laden guitar work, prominent, often melodic bass lines, and theatrical, wailing vocals. The genre's ethos is rooted in surrealism, camp, and horror film theatrics, exploring themes of mortality and morbidity with a distinctly theatrical and often androgynous presentation. While it had limited commercial success, Deathrock established a foundational aesthetic and sound that profoundly shaped subsequent goth and dark punk movements worldwide.
