Depressive Suicidal Black Metal (DSBM) emerged from the European black metal scene of the mid-1990s, building upon the atmospheric groundwork of artists like *Burzum*. The subgenre diverged from its parent genre's themes to focus on intense psychological distress. It is defined by raw, often lo-fi production that prioritizes atmospheric dread over technical precision. Instrumentation typically features highly distorted, tremolo-picked guitars delivering melancholic, repetitive melodies, alongside tortured, high-pitched shrieks and unconventional song structures. Its ethos is rooted in an unflinching exploration of depression, suicide, and nihilism, shaping a deeply insular but influential underground movement.
