Dub

Originating from late 1960s Jamaican sound system culture, Dub is a form of music production that reframes existing recordings as new instrumental compositions. Studio engineers like *King Tubby* and *Lee "Scratch" Perry* pioneered the form by deconstructing reggae tracks, isolating the drum and bass 'riddim,' and rebuilding the sonic space with studio effects. The mixing console became an instrument, using reverb, delay, and phase-shifting to create cavernous, atmospheric soundscapes. This practice of remixing and recontextualizing recorded music was foundational, shaping the development of hip-hop, post-punk, and numerous electronic music genres from jungle to dubstep.
