Vocals are typified by high-pitched, desperate shrieks rather than guttural growls. Rooted in a staunch DIY ethos, the genre rejects commercialism, circulating primarily through split 7" records and fervent underground networks. While remaining a niche subgenre, its formal innovations and raw catharsis shaped subsequent developments within hardcore and extreme music, influencing bands like *Portrayal of Guilt*.
