Merseybeat

Originating in early 1960s Liverpool, Merseybeat fused American R&B and rock and roll with British skiffle into a guitar-driven pop sound. Its form is defined by the interplay of melodic lead guitar, a chugging rhythm section, and prominent, often harmonized, lead vocals delivered by a standard four-piece lineup. The genre's energetic and concise song structures, exemplified by early work from *The Beatles*, propelled the initial wave of the British Invasion. This commercial success established a foundational template for subsequent power pop and indie rock, shaping the trajectory of popular music for the remainder of the decade.
