Psychedelic Folk

Psychedelic folk emerged from the mid-1960s folk revival, merging acoustic song structures with the experimental ethos of psychedelic rock. The style is defined by its synthesis of traditional instrumentation with studio effects like reverb and phasing, as well as the integration of non-Western musical ideas, including drones and modal melodies. Lyrical themes shifted from social protest to explorations of mysticism, nature, and internal consciousness, as exemplified by early innovators like *Donovan* and *The Incredible String Band*. While it rarely achieved major commercial success, its influence persists through the cult status of its key recordings and its periodic revival in later movements like freak folk.
