Psychedelic Soul

Psychedelic Soul emerged in the late 1960s as artists began merging the rhythmic structures of R&B and soul with the sonic adventurousness of psychedelic rock. The form is defined by its dense, layered production, utilizing studio effects like phasing, tape loops, and reverb alongside instrumentation such as fuzzed-out guitars, wah-wah pedals, and early synthesizers. Lyrically, it moved beyond traditional soul themes to embrace social commentary, political consciousness, and introspection. This fusion, pioneered by acts like *Sly & the Family Stone* and *The Temptations* on #Gordy#/#Motown#, laid the foundational groove and experimental ethos for much of the funk and progressive R&B that followed.
