Originating in Tokyo's Shibuya district during the late 1980s, Shibuya-kei is a pop subgenre defined by its eclectic, postmodern synthesis of disparate musical styles. It draws heavily from 1960s Western pop, particularly French yé-yé, lounge, bossa nova, and film scores, merging these with contemporary indie pop and electronic sensibilities.
