The style was catalyzed by a specific riff in *Suffocation*'s "Liege of Inveracity" and codified by bands like *Internal Bleeding*. It is characterized by heavily downtuned, palm-muted guitars creating percussive "slam" riffs, often juxtaposed with sections of intense blast beats and guttural, nearly unintelligible vocals.
