Slushwave

Originating in the mid-2010s as an atmospheric offshoot of vaporwave, slushwave pushes the parent genre's sample manipulation to its textural extreme. It is defined by its dense, viscous sound, achieved by layering heavily processed, pitch-shifted, and time-stretched audio sources until they become a near-unrecognizable wash of sound. Characterized by extreme reverb, phasing, and slow, crawling tempos, the genre eschews vaporwave's overt consumerist critique for a more introspective, hallucinatory, and often dreamlike or nightmarish ethos. Its impact lies in pioneering a form of purely textural, slow-motion ambient music that prioritizes immersive atmosphere over melody or explicit commentary.
