Thrash Metal

An extreme subgenre of heavy metal, thrash metal emerged in the early 1980s by merging the intricate, dual-guitar structures of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with the velocity and aggression of hardcore punk. Its sonic signature is defined by fast, percussive guitar riffs—often palm-muted and executed with intense down-picking—complex solos, and rapid-fire drumming, typically employing the double-bass 'skank beat'. Lyrically, it shifted focus from fantasy to stark social and political critique. The genre's initial wave, led by acts like *Metallica* and *Slayer*, established a blueprint that achieved significant commercial success in the late 1980s before influencing nearly every subsequent school of extreme metal.
