Totalism

Totalism emerged from New York's downtown scene in the late 1980s, serving as a maximalist counterpoint to the perceived austerity of earlier minimalism. Primarily driven by composers *Michael Gordon*, *David Lang*, and *Julia Wolfe* of the #Bang on a Can# collective, the style merges the repetitive structures of minimalism with the visceral power and amplified instrumentation of rock music. It is characterized by dense polyrhythmic textures, harmonically saturated drones, and an unrelenting rhythmic drive. Totalism rejects narrative development in favor of large-scale processes, creating immersive sonic environments that shaped a new direction for American contemporary music.
