Miserlou / Eight Till Midnight

by Dick Dale and The Del-Tones

Miserlou / Eight Till Midnight cover art

Adapting an Eastern Mediterranean folk song, Dick Dale invented the defining sound of instrumental surf rock with 'Miserlou'. He employed an aggressive, rapid-fire staccato picking technique designed to emulate the sound of the Arabic oud, amplified through custom Fender hardware that repeatedly blew out speakers during early performances. The track received a massive cultural resurgence decades later when prominently featured in the opening credits of 'Pulp Fiction'.
