Serving as the band's debut single, 'Arnold Layne' was produced by Joe Boyd and perfectly captured the whimsical yet darkly subversive nature of Syd Barrett's songwriting. The lyrics, detailing a transvestite who steals women's undergarments from washing lines, prompted a ban from the pirate station Radio London. Despite the censorship, its success announced The Pink Floyd as the premier act of the British psychedelic underground.
