Album Notes & Community Reviews

Serving as their major-label debut, this Joe Boyd-produced album significantly refined the upstate New York group's eclectic, independent sound into polished, literate folk-rock. 'The Wishing Chair' prominently features Natalie Merchant's distinctive vocal delivery and socially conscious lyricism, backed by Robert Buck's bright, ringing Rickenbacker guitar work. The record acted as a vital stepping stone, positioning the band at the vanguard of the burgeoning American college rock movement.
