INDUSTRIAL / NOISE

Originating in the mid-1970s with British provocateurs Throbbing Gristle and their label Industrial Records, the genre weaponized sound as a tool for social commentary and psychological exploration. It is defined by its abrasive sonic palette, which rejects conventional musicality in favor of dissonance, noise, and textured soundscapes built from tape loops, found sounds, synthesizers, and heavily processed instrumentation. The ethos is often confrontational, exploring themes of social control, alienation, and human pathology. While its commercial peak occurred in the 1990s, industrial's formal innovations have exerted a lasting influence on electronic, metal, and alternative music.
