Album Notes & Community Reviews
Fusing complex American hard bop with deeply traditional Middle Eastern and North African music, this groundbreaking project is credited as one of the earliest, most authentic experiments in world-jazz fusion. The bassist heavily features the oud and the kanun alongside standard jazz instrumentation, including stellar saxophone contributions from Johnny Griffin. The hypnotic, highly modal structures severely challenged Western rhythmic sensibilities and heavily prefigured the spiritual jazz explorations of the coming decade.
