Honey From a Winter Stone

Album Notes & Community Reviews

On 'Honey From a Winter Stone', trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire merges jazz, hip-hop, and chamber music, leading an ensemble that features the Mivos Quartet and improvisational vocalist Kokayi. The production, inspired by composer Julius Eastman's "organic music" concept, weaves these elements into suite-like compositions that move between intricate grooves, ambient textures, and stark melodicism. Described as a self-portrait, the work functions as a deeply personal and unflinching exploration of Black identity, resistance, and community.
