Album Notes & Community Reviews
On 'Chicago Tapes', German alto saxophonist Angelika Niescier leads a sextet of prominent Chicago musicians, including saxophonist Dave Rempis and flutist Nicole Mitchell, through a dynamic set of her original compositions. The album is rooted in avant-garde jazz and high-energy free improvisation, defined by a balance of deep grooves and fearless, razor-sharp ensemble interplay. The recording captures a volatile and kinetic session, with Niescier's tart saxophone lines engaging in spirited dialogues alongside her collaborators over a compelling and responsive rhythm section.
