Anonymous 4 recorded 'American Angels' at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, with Marsha Genensky leading the research into early American shape-note tunes and gospel songs. The twenty tracks span eighteenth-century New England psalmody, nineteenth-century shape-note songs from the rural South and gospel standards, and include two distinct settings of 'Amazing Grace'. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard classical chart and remained there for an extended run.
