After the Last Sky

Album Notes & Community Reviews

On 'After the Last Sky', oud master Anouar Brahem extends his synthesis of Arabic modal traditions and jazz improvisation into the realm of chamber music. The quartet setting pairs Brahem’s evocative compositions with the lyrical cello of Anja Lechner and the famously empathetic bass of Dave Holland, creating a deeply contemplative and spacious soundscape. The album’s distinctive character is further defined by the inventive pianism of Django Bates, whose complex harmonies and playful modernism provide a fascinating counterpoint to the ensemble's otherwise melancholic and searching dialogue.
