Archie Shepp's debut as a leader is a radical and loving tribute to his mentor, John Coltrane. Shepp re-imagines Coltrane's compositions, turning them into raw, turbulent, and emotionally charged explorations. It was a bold statement that established Shepp as a leading voice of the 'new thing,' deconstructing the work of a master to find a new path forward.
