Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, this album introduces a completely overhauled, highly transitional iteration of the legendary ensemble. Crucially, it marks the brief but explosive tenure of a young Keith Jarrett on piano and Chuck Mangione on trumpet. The fiercely swinging set expertly bridges the driving, aggressive rhythms of classic hard bop with hints of the progressive, expansive harmonic ideas that the new recruits would soon pioneer.
