Recorded during a remarkably prolific period before his devastating incarcerations, the brilliant alto saxophonist leads a fiercely swinging, highly inventive quartet session. Supported wonderfully by pianist Russ Freeman, the leader's tone is slightly hardened and deeply steeped in the blues, signaling a clear structural bridge between relaxed West Coast cool and aggressive East Coast hard bop. The exceptionally emotive, technically flawless improvisations underscore his standing as arguably the greatest post-Parker altoist.
