Following the departure of co-founder Chris Bell, 'Radio City' saw Alex Chilton steer the band into a rawer, more urgent territory, contrasting jagged guitar work and eccentric solos with enduring power pop melodies. The album captures a compellingly off-kilter sound, where brilliant, addictive hooks on songs like "September Gurls" are offset by unconventional harmonies and a messier, more desperate edge than its predecessor. Despite its initial commercial failure due to distribution issues, the record has since been critically reappraised as a landmark album and a definitive touchstone for the power pop genre.
