Album Notes & Community Reviews

Widely considered the first commercially successful conceptual album of the outlaw country movement, this double LP was composed entirely by eccentric poet and cartoonist Shel Silverstein. The record eschewed the heavily supervised Nashville production system, allowing Bare to record live in the studio with his own hand-picked musicians. Combining humorous, slightly bawdy tall tales with poignant acoustic balladry, it stands as a major triumph of unvarnished 1970s country storytelling.
