Bruce Springsteen completely stripped back the stadium-rock bombast of his previous work in favor of sparse, synthesized pop-rock and deeply intimate singer-songwriter arrangements. 'Tunnel of Love' serves as a sombre, poetic examination of failing marriages, romantic disillusionment, and personal loneliness. It is a mature, incredibly introspective shift that highlighted the vulnerability within his heartland narratives.
