Album Notes & Community Reviews

A deeply heartfelt tribute, 'Lover Man and Other Billie Holiday Classics' finds Carmen McRae honoring her primary vocal influence shortly after Holiday's death. Eschewing simple imitation, McRae applies her own behind-the-beat phrasing and crisp enunciation to Holiday's signature repertoire. The album is widely considered one of McRae's finest recordings, balancing intense emotional reverence with her own sophisticated swing.
