Album Notes & Community Reviews
Released on the prestigious, artist-run Strata-East label, the veteran baritone saxophonist shines in a spirited, highly melodic post-bop setting. Accompanied by a stellar quintet featuring Kenny Dorham on trumpet and Wynton Kelly on piano (in one of his final recordings), the session bridges classic hard bop swing with subtle modal elements. It stands as a vital, deeply soulful showcase of Payne's immense instrumental facility.
