Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded shortly after returning from a highly publicized European tour, this robust quintet date finds the famously melancholic trumpeter playing with unexpected, aggressive drive. Flanked by the immensely swinging tenor saxophone of Phil Urso, the highly cohesive arrangements successfully marry the breezy elegance of the West Coast style with the fiery, blues-drenched intensity of hard bop. The exceptionally tight recording proves the artist possessed a far more muscular instrumental capability than his romantic vocal hits suggested.
