Album Notes & Community Reviews
Following his breakthrough work with Gerry Mulligan, this release firmly established Chet Baker as a remarkably confident bandleader in his own right. The 'pianoless' format is abandoned in favor of the brilliant interplay with Russ Freeman, creating a slightly more robust but still deeply lyrical setting. The trumpeter's melancholic, vibrato-less tone perfectly encapsulates the intellectual aesthetic of West Coast jazz.
