Recorded in the Grote Zaal of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in November 1976 and coupled on its first issue with the three 脡tudes de concert, Arrau's cycle of Liszt's twelve Transcendental 脡tudes won the Liszt Record Grand Prix in 1979. He had learned the complete set at eleven under Martin Krause, himself a pupil of Liszt.
