Fiercely operating outside the traditional music industry, Martin Newell's DIY project distributed this charming, highly idiosyncratic album exclusively via homemade cassettes. 'In the Golden Autumn' masterfully balances jangly, 1960s-inspired British pop melodies with incredibly lo-fi, hiss-drenched bedroom recording techniques and rudimentary drum machines. The deeply nostalgic, fiercely independent record eventually became a hallowed cornerstone for the modern hypnagogic pop and indie-folk movements.
