Reacting directly to the overwhelming, unexpected superstardom of their debut, Adam Duritz channeled his profound alienation and anxiety into a notably darker, heavier sophomore effort. The acoustic-tinged jangle pop is frequently replaced by aggressive, distorted electric guitars and intensely introspective, melancholic lyricism. The difficult, passionate recording firmly solidified their artistic longevity beyond their initial massive radio breakthrough.
