Self-recorded exclusively on a boombox and distributed intimately on cassette, this album captures the outsider folk artist at his most stripped-down and painfully sincere. 'Respect' primarily features Johnston alone with an out-of-tune guitar or chord organ, singing highly personal, Beatles-influenced melodies about unrequited love and mental distress. The raw, unfiltered emotion of the recordings endeared him heavily to the burgeoning American indie rock underground.
